How Magic Edit Works
Select the part of the note you want to change, describe the update in plain language, and Magic Edit rewrites only that portion. The rest of the note stays unchanged. Because Magic Edit can access the session transcript, you can ask it to add details from the session, correct inaccuracies, adjust tone, or change the level of detail without leaving the note editor.
You can also run multiple Magic Edits at the same time and continue editing other parts of the note while Magic Edit works.
Three Ways to Use Magic Edit
There are three ways to start Magic Edit, depending on how much of the note you want to change.
Edit the Full Note
Use this option when you want to make a broad change across the entire note, such as adjusting the level of detail, changing the tone, or restructuring the content.
Open the note you want to edit.
Click the wand button at the top of the note, next to the Copy All button.
Type your instruction in the toolbar that appears, for example, "Make this note more concise" or "Add more detail about the client's mood."
Press Enter to send the request.
When the edit is complete, the updated text replaces the original. You can undo the change with Cmd+Z (Mac) or Ctrl+Z (Windows).
Edit a Section
Use this option when you want to revise a single section of a multi-section note without affecting the rest.
Hover over the section you want to edit.
Click the wand button that appears next to the section name.
Type your instruction and press Enter.
Only the selected section will be updated. All other sections remain unchanged.
Edit Highlighted Text
Use this option when you want to make a targeted change to a specific passage, such as adding a missing detail, correcting a detail, or rephrasing a sentence.
Highlight the text you want to change.
The Magic Edit toolbar appears automatically near your selection.
Type your instruction and press Enter.
Magic Edit will rewrite the highlighted passage based on your instruction. The surrounding text stays the same.
Common Use Cases
Add Missing Details From the Session
If the generated note leaves out something that came up during the session, highlight the area where you want the new information to appear. In the Magic Edit toolbar, describe what is missing, for example, "Add that the client mentioned trouble sleeping since last week." Magic Edit can pull that detail from the transcript and insert it in the right place.
Change the Level of Detail
If the note is too long or too brief, use a full note edit. For example, type "Make this note shorter and more concise" or "Expand on the clinical observations." Magic Edit will rewrite the entire note to match the level of detail you need.
Fix Potential Mistakes
If a name, pronoun, date, or clinical detail looks wrong, highlight it and tell Magic Edit what to correct. For example, "Change the pronoun to they/them" or "The client's name is Sara, not Sarah."
Adjust the Tone
Use a full-note or section edit to shift the writing style. For example, "Use a more formal clinical tone" or "Make the language warmer and more person-centered."
Keyboard Shortcuts
Enter - Send the Magic Edit request
Alt+Enter - Insert a new line in the instruction box
Escape - Close the Magic Edit toolbar
Cmd+Z / Ctrl+Z - Undo a Magic Edit change
Concurrent Edits
You can run multiple Magic Edits at the same time. For example, you might highlight a passage in one section and start an edit, then immediately highlight text in another section and start a second edit. Both requests can run in parallel, and you can continue typing elsewhere in the note while they work.
Keep Typing in Other Parts of the Note
Each in-progress edit is shown with a shimmer effect over the locked text. You cannot type inside a region that is currently being edited, but you can keep typing in any other part of the note.
How to Turn Off Magic Edit on Highlight
If the Magic Edit toolbar gets in the way when you highlight text, you can turn that behavior off.
Scroll to the Magic Edit section.
Toggle Show Magic Edit on Highlight off.
When this setting is off, Magic Edit will no longer appear when you highlight text. You can still use the wand buttons for full-note and section edits. You can turn the setting back on at any time from the same page.
FAQs
Does Magic Edit Have Access to the Session Transcript?
Yes. Magic Edit is session-aware. When your instruction depends on something discussed during the session, Magic Edit can automatically pull that information from the transcript. You do not need to re-type what was said. For example, you can write "Add what the client said about their sleep" or "Include the coping strategies that were discussed."
Can I Undo a Magic Edit?
Yes. Magic Edit integrates with your browser's native undo stack. Press Cmd+Z (Mac) or Ctrl+Z (Windows) to undo a change, just as you would with any other edit.
What Happens If I Edit While Magic Edit Is Working?
You can continue typing in any part of the note that is not currently being edited by Magic Edit. Locked regions (shown with a shimmer effect) will block input until the edit completes, but the rest of the note remains fully editable.
Can I Use Magic Edit on Any Note?
Yes. Magic Edit works on any note that has already been generated. Open the note and use any of the three methods described above.
Is Magic Edit Available on Mobile?
The full-note and section-edit wand buttons are available on mobile. The highlight-based toolbar is automatically disabled on touch-only devices because it conflicts with the system text selection popover.
